The Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Bill-stakeholder invite!!
By Shane Robins

February 3rd, 2015

Dear Stakeholder,

RE: Update on the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) legislation and invitation to attend informational meetings, Webinar sessions or comment on line.

The Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Bill was introduced into the Legislature in December and passed first reading. The intent is to have the Bill passed in the spring season to implement for the 2015 open water season. The AIS Bill can be found at http://web2.gov.mb.ca/bills/40-4/b012e.php.

We are now in the process of drafting regulations to accompany the Bill. These legislative pieces are being developed to provide the Province with a comprehensive suite of regulatory tools aimed at preventing the introduction and spread of Zebra Mussels and other AIS currently within Manitoba, and those species in neighboring jurisdictions (e.g. Eurasian Milfoil, Asian Carp, etc.).

These regulations will include a revised prohibited species list and propose to identify Lake Winnipeg and some connected water bodies as a control zone. Cleaning requirements for watercraft, water related equipment and conveyances (motor vehicles, watercraft and aircraft) both inside and outside the designated control zone are also being proposed. As well, specific requirements with respect to certain activities such as the movement of aquatic plants, bait harvest and use, and the diversion, appropriation and transfer of water are being considered.

We would like to invite you to attend one of the following stakeholder informational meetings being scheduled.
